When Chris Woods, who is an avid cyclist, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the age of 41, the goal was to find a bicycle ride that raised money for Parkinson's research. For years Chris had been riding in the 150 mile Diabetes ride, and the 150 mile MS ride. After much research, the Woods family realized that there was no ride out there for Parkinson's Disease, so they organized their own ride. The New England Parkinson's Ride took shape in the summer of 2008, and linked up with Team Fox at The Michael J Fox Foundation.
The ride begins and ends in Old Orchard Beach, ME, and travels through the countryside and shoreline. The first year there were 53 cyclists, and they raised $27,000 for Team Fox. The rides consisted of 30, 50, and 100 mile loops, and there were 10 rest stops manned by volunteers along the way.
In 2009 a 10 mile loop was added to facilitate younger families, and less experienced cyclists. This was a very exciting year……there were 105 cyclists, and they raised over $56,000!
The 2010 ride was a huge success. The sun was shining, and the cyclists and volunteers raised $106,322.oo for The Michael J Fox Foundation. There were 205 cyclists signed up for the ride.
The ride in 2011 was absolutely amazing. 330 cyclists rode the various routes, and the donations to Team Fox totalled over $160,000.00!!

We like to advertise this ride as a "weekend at the beach in Maine, with a ride thrown in for fun". There is a Pasta Supper offered on the Friday night before the ride, where cyclists socialize, and may pre-register for the morning's ride. This is held at Lyndberg's Landing at the end of The Pier at Old Orchard Beach.

The Alouette Beach Motel offers reduced rates for the weekend of the ride. Mention The New England Parkinson's Ride if you call to make reservations............1-800-565-4151 or 1-207-934-4151 or www.AlouetteBeachResort.com
